WesterwaldSteig: Marienthal Station/Raiffeisen Tower/Obererbach Station (11th Stage)

Description

From the station in Marienthal, with its namesake monastery, the WesterwaldSteig leads you along the Way of the Cross. After just under 2 kilometres, you reach the edge of the forest and, to your right, you can see the village of Hilgenroth. To the left lies Obererbach, from where you will later start your return journey. Via meadow paths, passing along the forest edges, you reach the next forest section, which soon offers you a view of the Raiffeisen Tower. From here, you have a magnificent view over the Bergisches Land, the Siebengebirge, and the Altenkirchen region, extending far into the Westerwald. From the Raiffeisen Tower, you follow the WesterwaldSteig back to the junction, where an access path leads you to Obererbach station.

IMPORTANT:

From 1st May to 1st September 2024, there will be train cancellations and rail replacement services (RB 90) on weekends between Altenkirchen and Westerburg. DB InfraGO will not be able to staff the signal boxes in Nistertal, Hachenburg, and Ingelbach on weekends and public holidays during this period, resulting in train cancellations between Altenkirchen and Westerburg. The cancelled trains will be replaced by buses. The replacement bus stops are not located close to all stations; please follow the signage on the platforms and the passenger information from the Hessian State Railway.

Directions

The access path from Marienthal station (request stop!) to the main trail is approximately 500 metres long. Please note that from the Raiffeisen Tower, you will walk back along the same WesterwaldSteig route to Obererbach, from where a 1.4 km access path leads to Obererbach station. The junction to the station is located at the K52.

The access paths are marked with a green "W" on a yellow background, and the signposts feature a yellow arrowhead.

Safety instructions

• If you feel that certain sections of the path are not walkable for you, you should avoid them. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.
• In autumn, it is especially important to be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can cover uneven surfaces, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You should expect such obstructions when going on a hike.
• Although the trail is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry an appropriate hiking map or download the free app "Rheinland-Pfalz erleben."

Equipment

• Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet conditions, or from heat and sun.
• Take enough water with you, as there are not refreshment opportunities available everywhere.
• Please wear hiking shoes suitable for the trail, which provide adequate support even on slippery, steep, rocky, or uneven paths.

Tips

Park your car at the endpoint (Obererbach station) and first take the train to the starting point of your tour. Then you can relax and walk back without any time pressure.
