Description
Insights into the history of the railway in and around Altenkirchen in the Westerwald
Altenkirchen has been an important railway junction for the Westerwald since the end of the 19th century. The railway provided jobs for hundreds of people in the district town and its surroundings, supporting their families. It was a growth engine for the local economy, invigorating the entire town, and enabling many people to travel. With this train tour, we will discover the impressive history of the railway in and around Altenkirchen along the still existing railway area. The railway almost ran through the upper town. We will recognize the great significance of the railway for the people in the region, but also see why the town suffered so much during World War II. We will explore the dimensions of the old railway facilities and imagine the numerous impressive steam locomotives whose whistles echoed through the town.
