To the Tour PlanerDescription
The mysterious forests and idyllic meadow landscapes around the small town of Blickhausen are reminiscent of the "Shire", the home of the hobbits in the fantasy classic "The Lord of the Rings". You walk under mighty oaks on rustic paths and are accompanied by the babbling of the Firzelsbach through meadows and meadows. On the tour you will be surprised by numerous mythical creatures artfully carved from wood. Wizards, dwarves and tree people await you along the way. You walk through a world of adventure through mystical forests, over narrow paths above the Sieg and along wide meadow landscapes.

Parking
Hikers' parking lot near Blickhausen on the K 129 (50°46'40.6"N7°46'23.0"E)
After the first small hikers' parking lot at the starting point in Blickhausen, there is another larger hikers' parking lot about 500 m away in the direction of Hof Auen. Please do not park on the local farm roads (parking prohibited) and not on agricultural land or their access roads.
If these parking spaces are already occupied, there is another hikers' parking lot below Schönstein Castle in Wissen, on the "Frankenthal" road (B 62). From here you can reach the Auenlandweg in about 1 km via the Heubrücke (bridge over the Sieg) past Schönstein Castle (please follow the blue markings of the Natursteig Sieg).
There is also a hikers' parking lot in 57537 Mittelhof, Betzdorfer Landstraße (located about 100 m from the town center in Mittelhof in the direction of Wissen on the county road). From here, follow the county road towards Wissen for about 1 km via Hüngesberg to Oberkrombach, then turn right towards Blickhausen to the starting point.
Directions
The trail starts at the hiking parking lot in Blickhausen. From the parking lot, the trail first leads along a paved road on the outskirts of Blickhausen. A short time later, the path branches off at a field bordered by dense forest. Mighty oak trees stand at the edge of the path. The circular route then leads you to a fork in the path, behind the farm the path winds its way deeper into the dark forest. You hike over hill and dale on narrow paths on the steep slope above the Sieg through a fabulous natural landscape. You continue along the path, which now runs alongside the Firzelsbach stream. Under tall trees, you reach an asphalt road. Cross this road and continue uphill back to Blickhausen. After a short section through the forest, you reach the starting point on soft field paths along extensive meadows.
Safety instructions
Suitable for children, but not suitable for strollers.
It is advisable to bring your own food in your backpack, as there are no places to stop for refreshments.
In the winter months, the quality of the trail may be impaired due to logging work on certain sections of the trail. If you think that certain sections of the trail are not suitable for you, you should avoid them. In adverse weather conditions, natural trails can become muddy and slippery. In autumn in particular, it is important to be aware that leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the trail. You must expect this type of impairment to the trail when you go hiking. Although the trail is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.
Equipment
The Auenlandweg is suitable for families with children, but not for strollers.
The Auenlandweg is quite challenging, with a hundred meters of elevation gain on the relatively short route. But because there is so much to discover, you can manage the route without any major problems at a leisurely pace, even without being particularly fit. Since the route partially leads along narrow paths, you should definitely think about sturdy shoes. A little caution is required above the Sieg, as the narrow paths can be slippery when it rains.
Tips
The Shire Trail is a very special kind of family hiking trail. "Lord of the Rings" fans in particular will get their money's worth here, as the carved figures along the trail combined with the mystical landscape are very reminiscent of Middle Earth. But even children who don't know the stories about hobbits, dwarves and elves will be thrilled by the mythical creatures along the trail.
Every year, the hiking magazine selects "Germany's Most Beautiful Hiking Trail" in the categories of day and multi-day tours. The Shire Trail took second place in the day tour category and is Germany's second most beautiful hiking trail!
